When we first meet Kenneth Randall, he is a broken man. His wife and unborn child were murdered and he feels he has nothing left to live for. He decides to end it all in the storm-tossed seas but it’s really hard to drown when the lighthouse keeper is a mermaid and she’s decided to save you. His life is about to change dramatically in ways he never dreamed of.
Tessa Lonike is the local lighthouse keeper but she has a secret– she’s also a mermaid. She loves her privacy and her island is her sanctuary. She doesn’t really have a lot of time for humans so when Kenneth returns to the island a year after she saved him from drowning she’s not really happy to see him. In fact she hopes he’s forgotten everything that happened that night but as fate would have it he hasn’t forgotten everything and he’s returned to get answers and hopefully an explanation of the dreams he’s been having.
Tessa reluctantly agrees to let Kenneth stay on as the handyman for a trial period. Within twenty four hours he’s not only seen her tail he’s also shared her bed and things are really getting interesting for the pair as Tessa still wants her space and to her Kenneth is just a means to scratch her itch– at least that’s what she tells herself. Kenneth believes life is too short and is in it for the long haul.
Enter Jake, Tessa’s ex whose treasure hunting has unearthed what could well be proof that mermaids not only exist but he may also have found the location of their original home under the waves. Jake claims he wants Tessa back she also wants Tessa to help him recover the treasure he believes will lead them to the lost world of the Mer.
If you like a fast paced read that draws you in quickly and leaves you begging for more this is the book for you. Ms Quinn takes us below the waves to an ancient civilization that has both good and evil characters. All the characters are developed to the point that you either love or hate them. I found myself really absorbed in the plot and emotionally invested in the characters. Even the secondary characters held a lot of appeal and I’m sure some are already screaming in Ms Quinn’s head begging her to tell their stories. All I can add is I’ll be waiting none too patiently for the next installment of the Dark Tides series. Ms Quinn but only delivered she went above and beyond.
