An Interview with Marie Rochelle!

Rites of Romance welcomes author Marie Rochelle!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
First, I want to thank Rites of Romance for this interview. In the back of my mind from a young age, I have always wanted to be a writer but I didn’t go for it until several years ago and I’m thrilled that I did. I LOVE my career and the wonderful fans I constantly hear from.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Wow…it depends on the book. When I write a short story maybe it takes me six to eight weeks if I don’t have anything else going on in my life. My longer novels take me more time especially if they are part of a series. My fans know how much I adore writing a series.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

My work schedule is pretty tight. I always try to make my word count for the day even if that means getting up earlier.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Good question . I think my most interesting writing quirk is that I have to listen to music when I write. It makes me focus on my characters better.

When did you write your first book?

I wrote my first book over five years ago.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I like hanging out with my friends, watching television and going to Books a Millions.

What does your family think of your writing?

My family is very supportive. I couldn’t do it without them.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

The most surprising thing I have learned from my books is how much my characters will demand for their stories to be told. They won’t allow me to skip a day from working on them.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I honestly don’t know how many books I have written because I get so caught up in my characters. I think my favorite characters tie between Storm from Taken by Storm(he gets talked about a lot) or Hayward(from Loving True), but I do love all of my characters.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Actually. I hear from my readers quite often which I love. They ask me about when I’m going to do another series, finish up a book in a current series I’m working on. Or when a new book is coming out. They also tell me sometimes how much they just enjoy reading my books.

What do you think makes a good story?

I think a good story involves romance and chemistry between the characters.

Who is your favorite author and why?

I have too many to pick just one.

How did you come up with the title?

My titles just come to me.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I want to tell my fans thanks for being so supportive of my career. My readers are who keep me writing and searching for new alpha males to write about every day.

Can you tell us a little about your latest release or upcoming books?

The new book I have coming out is on Nov. 1st from Phaze Books. It’s called Roped into You.

Known as the ‘wealthiest man’ in Wyoming Rancher Clayton Moore was used to the appreciate stares and seductive offers from the single females in his town, but he wasn’t interested in any of them…Clayton only wanted to make love to the mocha skin beauty living under his roof…Leila.
Leila Hilson was more than nervous of Clayton Moore the first time she met him, but the more she was around him it turned into something different and increasing HOT! Was it possible that their sizzling attraction to each other could turn into something deeper?

Taza is a prince of the Seahorse people. He is in a bit of trouble. Among his people it is the men who are fertile and have the children, and as the only Royal male, he is being hunted by two very determined female seahorses who want to make him into a broodmare. As he has no interest in being worn out by having litter after litter until his body gives out, he runs away from the palace to dry land to escape the voracious females. Out of the frying pan into the fire. He no sooner climbs out of the sea, than he is caught by a crazy human who thinks he is a mermaid, and wants to eat him to gain immortality. Not eat him in the good sense, but fry him up with oil and seasonings eat him. As he gets loose and runs from the human male with the fillet knife, he runs into a bar and hides behind the biggest strongest male who his instincts say is safe. This male is Astika, who is a prince of the Nagas, whose other form is half snake and half human. Astika defeats the crazy human, almost by accident, and Taza declares he now belongs to him. Since he is royal and can’t be just lovers, this means that they are now mates. Astika is not thrilled by this announcement, but can’t find any way out.

The story of how they get to know each other is hilarious and exciting. This is a very interesting and unique take on an M/M romance. Both species are very different, and not ones common in paranormal romances. They are also very funny together, especially Taza, who although tiny compared to Astika, doesn’t let anything intimidate or stop him for long. Humans don’t come off especially well in this story, but we don’t always. I quite enjoyed this story, and although I have always liked Stephanie Burke as a writer, this was very different from anything else of hers I have read. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light funny read. I also enjoyed the fun facts about sea horses at the end. Two thumbs up!

Max wants to come out to his parents. However, he would like some help when he does. So he turns to his older brother’s best friend, Daniel, who he over-heard his parents saying was gay. Of course, that’s just what he tells Daniel. What he really wants is for Daniel to be his first time. What he really wants, is Daniel, period. Daniel has always thought of Max as a younger brother, feeling like he had to step in to be what was needed after his best friend dies. Now, this very attractive young man who admits he’s gay, is coming on to him. He really shouldn’t touch him, but a guy only has so much resistance.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I’d thought I would. It had a tried and true premise, younger brother with crush on older brother’s best friend. It has been used as a plot line many times before, but I don’t have a problem with that. What I had a problem with, is that it seemed the author tried to make this story too complicated for a short story. There were too many strings from the past, the deceased brother, tangling things up in the present. It made things less enjoyable for me. I did think the sex was hot, and I liked the resolution with the parents and the ending. It just seemed the story was trying too hard.

Boston Kincaid, the rich playboy with the good looks and fancy life and yet he felt something was always missing. Out of the blue one day a letter arrives from Cassidy Trenton looking for her father and his life is forever changed. The girl’s mother, the one who got away, Ellie Trenton, has always been in the forefront of his mind and with the letter as his reasoning to seek her out he searches for the truth and maybe to see if the spark that once burned bright could reignited.

Single working mother Ellie Trenton is completely taken aback to find the one man she never got over and the one who fathered her child standing on her front porch. Ten years is a long time, but all the years melted away with one look at his face. The chemistry and desire are as fresh as if no time passed at all. But lies and mistrust along with a devastating past come to light as they learn to co-parent and try to be civil for the sake of their daughter. Can the love they had really be recreated or does the past and mistrust keep them from exploring the love they once had?

I really enjoyed this book. The story is a contemporary romance and the story line very well written. The reader will laugh and cry with the characters and root for them to become a couple again. Boston is a great male lead. He is smart, sexy, fun, but real. He has his flaws, he has made mistakes and he learns and changes throughout the book. Ellie is strong willed and will fight to the death for what she believes is right for her child. She is misguided at times, but she also grows throughout the story. Both characters learn more about themselves and what they lost all those years ago. Trying to overcome a hurtful past full of misunderstandings and lies makes the journey back to one another difficult and at times frustrating even for the reader. However, as a reader it compelled me to want more. Even the secondary characters brought fun and enlightenment to the storyline. Nora is a great sounding board for Ellie and Keller is the best friend any kid could want. The love scenes are tasteful and PG, but the reader can feel the pull. All in all the book was a fun read. You will not be disappointed.

Noah and Jason are FBI agents. So, when they wake up, naked and trapped in a cabin in a remote area, naturally they first suspect some kind of foul play. What they didn’t suspect, was that Jason’s rich best friend did it as a gift for him, knowing Jason had a crush on his boss, Noah. Noah has always been curious about sex with a man, and when he discovers that Jason is gay, he takes this opportunity to explore it. He hoping to find that it not all that great, and he can finally put it behind him. Unfortunately for Noah, the sex is fantastic, leaving him more confused than ever. In Jason’s case, because they ended up making love instead of merely having sex, he couldn’t help but get his hopes up for a real relationship. When a confused Noah dashes his hopes, Jason is hurt and angry. He spends the next week being cold to Noah, while Noah wonders why it bothers him so much and why he has an aching in his chest.

This had a very interesting beginning, with the two agents being kidnapped, drugged, and locked in together naked. It still seems to be taboo, or frowned upon, for men in any police sector, including the FBI, to be gay. I’m not sure what the reasoning is, and how one’s sexuality would affect how anyone performs in a job. So, it is very risky for Noah to even consider having a relationship with another man. I like how this was realistically and sensitively portrayed in this story. Noah, gradual realizes that he needs this, in spite of the risks. Of how, he is somewhat cautious about it, not willing to come out immediately until he has time to explore his relationship with Jason. Jason, who has been burned in the past, wants a commitment that it’s not a casual relationship. I think the relationship was handled very well, and enjoyed watching it unfold. The sex was hot too, for those who look for that. The only thing I found lacking, is we never got to find out Noah’s family’s reaction to it, except for his younger brother. Still, very well done, and I enjoyed it.

Blurb:
Ben Eckhart has been the object of Kari Kirkland’s lust for almost three years. Yet he’s never spoken a word to her and why would he? She’s a plus-sized woman with scars that haunt her every day. And although Kari longs for happily ever after, she’s pretty much given up on love.
When their boss declares he’s having a mandatory picnic, Ben not only talks to Kari, he wants to know if she’s going and if she’ll be alone. Kari is, if only to fantasize about Ben in his swim shorts.
But Ben has other ideas in mind for Kari. He’s bringing along his best friend and lover Adam – to help him seduce Kari into believing there’s great sex and true love in her future.
Unexpectedly trapped on a deserted island, Kari witnesses the men having sex then lets herself get talked into sex on the beach and a whole lot more. But when they’re rescued, will Kari accept their proposition or cast their new found love Adrift?

The was a great feel good book with lots of hot sex thrown in. When I finished this book I felt really upbeat and happy. The story shows people who are not perfect, not “beautiful people” but people you can relate to and feel for. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it .

An Interview with Jannine Corti-Perska!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve written short stories since I was a young girl, but I became aware of writing longer, more involved stories in my teens. In no way did I ever consider writing for publication. When I was a stay-at-home mom in the late 70s, I read 2-3 historical romance books a week. Somewhere during those years I decided to try my hand at writing the kind of books I read.

How long does it take you to write a book?

If I wasn’t so distracted, I could write two books–85,000 + words each–a year. At present, my limit seems to be one per year.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I don’t seem to have a schedule any longer. I do like to write in the morning, after my first cup of coffee, reading the newspaper and feeding the dogs. With second cup in hand, I check my email then review what I’ve written the day before, after which I begin writing. I’m often there until noon. I get my second wind about 4 o’clock and try to write between making dinner and giving the dogs their second meal of the day.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I’m not sure I have any. I listen to Italian music when I write an Italian medieval. Is that a quirk? If so, I usually listen to country/western music when I write historical western romances.

When did you write your first book?

That’s a long way to think back. I’d say around 1980. Maybe 1982.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I tend to my gardens, both floral and vegetable. I watch Italian soccer matches. I like to play soccer with one of my Rat Terriers on the front lawn. She’s better than I am, lol.

I have a huge backlog of romances I want to read. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to read. I miss it terribly.

With the holidays approaching, I create silk or dried floral arrangements, make wreathes, bake.

What does your family think of your writing?

They are very supportive and proud, even though they lovingly joke around and say I write smut. My husband actually read one of my books years ago. My three daughters read my books, but they skip over the love scenes. <g>

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

There are rules, lol. The first book I wrote broke every rule that ever existed in writing a romance novel. I even formatted my manuscripts to make the print size and wide margins the same as a book. Yeah, I was extremely naïve. But I honestly thought that when books were submitted, they had to look like a book on the shelf. And I meticulously made sure my manuscripts did. (I realized when I got my first rejection that I was so, so wrong.)

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve been asked this many times, and I usually say at least 20. I’ve been writing nearly 30 years, with several years in which I took a break. I finally took an actual count: 17 historicals and 9 contemporaries. Plus many stories started and abandoned.

I have a few favorite books, but two at the top of my list are REBEL HEART and SURRENDER TO HONOR. In REBEL HEART, I absolutely love the hero Beau Hamilton. He’s crass and practical, and kind-hearted, though he doesn’t want anyone to know he has a heart. This story takes place in 1873, Santa Fe, N.M. Beau’s an ex-gunslinger getting paid to look after a pampered N.Y. woman who inherits a sheep ranch out west. She has no idea her father hired him. When she hires him to protect her sheep and ranch from the bad guys, Beau is caught between a rock and a hard place, as the saying goes. Sometimes I felt sorry for Beau. <G>

SURRENDER TO HONOR is a 15th century medieval that takes place in Palermo, Sicily. The hero Antonio and heroine Prima are so opposite. He doesn’t carry weapons, preferring to resolve differences with words, while Prima is a little warrior, mail and all, and an expert with a sword and a bow and arrow. I dedicated this book to my Sicilian mother. She was as tenacious as Prima.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I get some fan mail. Usually the readers comment on how much they love my stories and hero/heroine and that they feel transported to the time and setting of the book. They tell me they can’t wait for my next release.

What do you think makes a good story?

I think this is a two-way street. A good, strong plot will hold the readers attention. If the plot is weak or as holey as Swiss cheese, by the end of the first chapter or two they’ll see right through it.

The characters are equal to the plot in writing a good story. If there is no conflict, no growth, no likeable hero and heroine, no plausible reason for them to have their own story, readers will get bored. For me, strong heroes and heroines are very important. My stories are character-driven.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Johanna Lindsey and Kathleen Woodiwiss. I loved Lindsey’s dialogue. I always thought she was the best at carrying on a story through words. She conveyed so much through what her characters said, be it spoken with sarcasm, breathlessness, excitement. She’s the reason I write dialogue well.

Kathleen Woodiwiss wrote the flowery, flowing stories with larger than life characters and stories that sucked me in and transported me to the story’s era. Her books were beautifully written.

How did you come up with the title?

Coming up with a title for a historical is much easier than one for a contemporary. At least it is for me. Sometimes I use the plot to write the title. Or words in a song. Sayings, something I read. There are quite a few factors that come into play when deciding a title. And I always have to have a title before I can begin writing. Oh, I could have put this one under #4–quirks. LOL

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I’d love to hear from you. Whether or not you like my books, have a suggestion for a sequel…anything you have to say is important to me. And I will respond quickly.

Can you tell us a little about your latest release or upcoming books?

Over the summer I signed 4 contracts for historical romances. The release dates are TBA.

Writing is Like Driving- Guest Blog Post by Sapphire Phelan

Writing Is Like Driving

Writing can be tough sometimes, especially when you hit a pothole in middle of the roadway. Yes, writing can be like driving in real life. You know you have to take driving lessons to be able to take that driver’s test in order to get your driver’s license so you can drive a car. Same goes for those English classes in school and college, plus writer’s workshops you enroll in at conventions, conferences and writer’s festivals. It’s all about making you the best writer you can be, just like driving lessons will hopefully make you the best driver you can be.

And like all drivers should to become a better driver, so should you should write every day to become a better writer.  Practice always makes perfect, or as close as you can get. Even if it’s not a manuscript you have due, or a book, story or poem that you’re working on, just writing anything for a few minutes, even what you might think is garbage, can be beneficial. Besides, that garbage one day may spark a story idea and then, it’s no longer garbage—right?

A good driver cares about his/her car. They change the oil when it’s needed, get it new tires, have it inspected, and get it repaired when it is required. You put gas in it, washer fluid, add oil when it’s needed, and whatever else you know the vehicle necessitates. Same goes for the tools of a writer’s trade. Your PC or laptop needs a virus and spysweeper program installed, especially if you use said computer to go online for research or to do promotions for your books. You clean it, set up programs that are needed for writing, do a virus scan weekly and whatever else you feel your computer needs. And not just the computer, but you must take care of yourself! You do this by a good diet, exercise, and proper amount of sleep each night. You make sure you don’t catch any diseases, for even a cold can befuddle the thinking processes. After all, those lovely stories are in your head and a foggy brain doesn’t function well getting them out and into a manuscript.

There’ll be times when you hit those potholes, or writer’s block. Even you need to get up out of that chair to go read a book, watch a movie, take a walk around the neighborhood or work on another manuscript or short story, when you just can’t continue writing on a particular day. It happens. No one is going to beat you over the head about it. The next day, just get back behind the wheel (or in front of the laptop/PC) and get back on track with what you were working on. After all, don’t you get tired of driving when you’ll been doing it for several hours on the road and need to pull over? Same goes for writing.

Next time you sit down in front of your screen and it’s opened to Microsoft Word, ready for you to type in some words, think of it like getting behind the wheel and heading down the road to unknown parts. Writing is like driving and your story is the world that flies by as you head down the highway of imagination.

Victoria Blisse interview!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved writing and making up stories, just ask my mum. I was always playing pretend as a child and as soon as I could write I would write stories to entertain myself.  So really, I’ve wanted to be a writer as long as I’ve been alive. An author was always my dream career that I’d mention but never think I’d ever be one and look at me now.  Okay, I’m rich and famous yet but that’s really secondary to the satisfaction of writing and having people read my stuff.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Well, it depends what I’m writing and that doesn’t necessarily just mean length. If the force is with me I can knock out a 15-20k story in a week but other times I can struggle to write a short story within a month.  And then of course I’m one of these mad people who attempt NaNoWriMo in November each year and that involves writing 50 000 words in a month!

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I write in the mornings every day, or as near to that as I can manage. So I tend to get up between 5.30 and 6am and write for a few hours before I have to get my daughter up for school. When I have a deadline I will write through the day too but I always work best in the morning.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Well I love to bake, it’s relaxing for me and sewing too either hand sewing or embroidery or getting to grips with a bigger project sewn on my machine. I also love to read, I don’t think you’d find an author who doesn’t and I have a particular fondness for fantasy books and authors like Terry Pratchett and David Gemmell.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I do hear back from my readers a lot actually, sometimes by email (there’s a contact me form on victoriablisse.co.uk) but often via either facebook  or twitter as I am frequently on both. So if there’s anyone out there who’d like to get in touch you can friend me at: http://www.facebook.com/victoriablisse

Or you can tweet with me at:

http://www.twitter.com/victoriablisse

I love to interact with people. A good chat can really brighten up a person’s day. I get lots of lovely compliments and the odd request for bookmarks and things. I always send signed bookmarks to anyone who asks nicely!

What do you think makes a good story?

Emotion.

Okay, that’s a bit of a short answer but that is what makes a good story. It needs to provoke emotion in the reader which means you need to believe in the characters and care for them. The best books make you laugh and cry and nod in agreement and make your blood boil with anger and your heart ache with loss. Good writing is all about that emotional rollercoaster.

How did you come up with the title of your latest work?

Ah, titles. I am rubbish with titles and my secret weapon is my husband, he comes up with all my best titles. In fact he dreamed one of them. One morning he was telling me all about a weird dream he’d had where he was a vampire serving at a bar called “The Point” and suddenly he’d not only named my vampire book, he’d named the bar in it.

And now Stopping Point comes from the same source. My husband is awesome. I might rent him out for a reasonable sum of money to write people’s titles for them.

Please can you tell us a little about your latest release or upcoming books?

I certainly can, Stopping Point is Book two in my Point Vamp series and here’s the blurb:

Josh is a vampire he just doesn’t quite know it yet.

He is confused and his voluptuous sire, Cara is far too busy being mysterious to really help him unlock the secrets of his Afterlife. However, he pieces it together by himself and decides to turn his best mates into Vampires too. This doesn’t quite go to plan but he does discover The Point and its unique, ten-second rule.

Cara does not approve of Josh visiting The Point but that night she turns up at his door bloodied and much more dead than usual, and accepts Josh’s help to escape from her much older and much crazier Sire Leopold. How is Josh going to defeat an older, wiser and more powerful vampire? He hasn’t a clue but for Cara he is willing to find out.

I’ve discovered rather a love of vampires!

It’s available from Total-E-Bound now: http://www.total-e-bound.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=951

Thanks for having me!

Why Write Romance

“Why do you write romance?” is a question I am often asked. Sometimes it is asked in a condescending way, even patronizing, other times it is a genuine question. Sometimes I have been stuck for an answer. “Because I like romance,” I often say and then wonder if that truly is the reason.

Romance, we are told makes the world go round, so why not have books dedicated to romance? When I first started writing I wrote historical romance, romance was not essential to the plot but it was an element. Feeling like a change I started to write contemporary romance and found it really challenging and exciting. With romance you can travel to exotic places, you need not worry about money; you can be rich or merely comfortably off. I don’t write “Clogs and Shawl” novels, which are really popular, but when I write romance I like my hero and heroine to experience “conflict” and “passion” but don’t want them worrying about whether they can afford a loaf of bread! Writing romance is fun, as well as hard work. As many a romantic novelist will tell you, it is not easy to write a romantic novel!

Recently I have been trying my hand at romantic suspense. Here the romance is not the most important part of the book (just as with an historical romance) but it is certainly necessary. I have written four romantic suspense novels now and only one had things not turn out as the reader (or the author) expected.

My latest novel “A Fatal Flaw” is full of suspense and secrets but there is a dashing hero and an attractive heroine. Ooh, I thought, I hope these two get it together because I like them both. Do they? Well you will have to read the book to see.

“Why do I write romance” it’s fun to write, it’s challenging and isn’t there enough misery in the world without my adding to it? Let’s smile, let’s hear wonderful music, and let love overcome all. Isn’t it what we all dream about anyway?
